San Rafael fly'n Lions Club

The San Rafael fly'n Lions Club, started when Dr. Howard Levenson served his first term as Club President (1969-1970).

The fly'n Lions used their airplanes for attending Lions Conventions, humanitarian emergencies, transporting visiting Lion dignitaries including International Presidents to meetings, student contestants to Lions sponsored contests, and human organs to transplant hospitals.

An interesting story about using airplanes to make visitations occurred during a District 4-C2 Visitation Contest that had always been won by the Eureka, California Lions Club. The Eureka Club would hire a bus, and the whole club would travel 252 miles to the San Francisco Bay Area, and make visitations to as many Morning, Noon, and Evening Lions Clubs as possible in two days and nights before returning home. They received a point for each Lion making the trip to every Club visited. Then San Rafael fly'n Lions started to make their visitations by airplane.  The fly'n Lions won the Contest for the first time by logging over 13,000 visitation miles. The District changed the rules after that, but the fly'n Lions still won the Contest for the next three years.

Their first trading pin (1972) was taken from the Club's Friendship Banner (1969-1970). The pin was so popular, smaller versions were produced  that were suspended from propellers starting with white (1973), blue (1974), and red (1975).

Then it was decided to issue pins to show the regular airplanes used for the Club's  humanitarian service and visitations.  These airplanes included the Piper Cherokee 180 (1978); Cessna 172 Skylane (1979); and Beech Bonanza S-35 (1980).  Each pin had four colors: Silver; Bronze; Pewter; and Gold.

The 60th Charter Anniversary pin (1982) was a three piece pin done with a Skywriter airplane making a "60". It has a spinning propeller.

The 65th Charter Anniversary (1987) pin has the Radial Engine with a white cowling, and spinner propeller, and was Lions Clubs International's Best Pin Award winner at the 1988 Convention.  A Red cowling version (1989) was issue to honor the Pin's Award. Then a Blue cowling version was issued for the Club's 70th Charter Anniversary (1992).

A small lapel trading pin was made with a Piper Cherokee 180 (1995) within a blue ring.

The 75th Charter Diamond Anniversary pin was the last pin designed for the Club (1997).  The pins were produced with and without sparkles.  The sparkle version was for members only.

There is a small lapel pin (1971) given to anyone that has flown on a Club Visitation, or other reason, such as a humanitarian mission, or Lions Club function. This pin is the smallest of all the Club's pins.  It is not a trading pin, and was never for sale.

All Club pins were designed by Lion Dr. Howard Levenson, except the lapel pin that was designed by 1971-1972 President Lion Cliff Lund in 1971 to give to members that made flights with the Club.
